Diegueño Middle School

Diegueño Middle School was founded in the early 1980's in Encinitas, in San Diego County, California, as part of the San Dieguito Union High School District. Since then, there have been many state-of-the-art improvements of equipment, appliances, and technology.
The grades at Digueño Middle School are 7th and 8th and has about 1,200 students enrolled every year. There are many interesting and unique electives that are available at Digueño including cartooning and journalism. The ASB (assembled student body) also is a major program at Diegueño. Dances, games, and most of the community projects are set up and run by ASB. There is a teacher every year who provides guidance and encouragement for the students, but the students pretty much run the whole show. The Diegueño mascot is a cougar.
Diegueño has been rivals with Oak Crest Middle School since Oak Crest was built.

The school is part of a district-wide program that offers students the opportunity to take additional classes on Saturday mornings.[1]
A school drama class teaches students the history of clowning and trains them to create their own clown antics, as part of a month-long school program.[2]

For both the 1992-93 and the 1999-2000 school years, Diegueño Middle School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education, the highest honor that an American school can achieve.[3]
Diegueño was recognized as a California Distinguished School in both 1999 and 2003.[4]

Caitlin Keenan, a student at the school, was profiled as one of the area's top swimmers in her age group.[5]
