DIM8020
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DIM8020 (previously DIM8067) is a V-Set motor carriage in the CityRail (passenger railway) fleet in Sydney, Australia.
It was the leading car involved in the Glenbrook train disaster, in which it received critical damage to its front and lower compartments.
Due to a shortage of motor carriages from past accident scrappings, it was decided to rebuild DIM8067, and convert and bring Contura Conference Car DCT9034 back into active service. Since DCT9034 was a driving trailer, the driving components would be given to DIM8067, and the cab area in DCT9034 was replaced with longitudinal seating. Part of the carriage rebuild on DIM8067 involved the fitment of stainless steel fluting as fitted on the final "DKM/DKT" series "V" set carriages and the contrasting styles of stainless steel can be seen on the driver's side of the carriage.
To avoid any reference and insensitivties to the victims of the accident, DIM8067 was be re-numbered DIM8020 and DCT9034 would be re-numbered DET9216.
DIM8020 and DET9216 were originally planned to be permanently coupled. However, this was not the case and they have since been separated into different V sets.
To avoid going past Penrith, DIM8020 was swapped with DTM8034 and was coupled with DTD9031 which regularly operated on the now discontinued CityRail Wyong-St.Marys Cross-Regional Service ("The River"). When "The River" service stopped as part of the new timetable, There were 2 cars left to spare:
DIM8020 and DTD9031
It was decided that DTD9031 would have its driving components removed, pushing a 3-car V-Set into a four-car one. Many had complained about the "ill-fated" car still being allowed on the Cityrail network, and Cityrail gave into these people, and the DIM8020 remains in the Flemmington Maintenance Centre, until the manager one day builds up the courage to place it back in the Cityrail Network.
Right now, this train is still in a reasonable shape, with only one fog light taken out of the nose, and was given to another V Set. Talks are going on about inserting 8020 with a four car V Set (DIM 8068's trailer) as 8068 is currently being repaired from fire damage. However, it seems unlikely, as it seems that the minister will say that the V Set fleet can run without DIM 8020.
