As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Diphu had a population of 52,062. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Diphu has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80% and, female literacy is 69%. In Diphu, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Diphu Govt. College [1] - Diphu Govt. College was established in 1964 with the main aim of providing higher education in the backward Karbi Anglong District of Assam. Distinguished local leaders of that time like Chatrasing Teron, Chandra sing Teron, Dhaniram Rongpi, Gojendra Nath Goswami, Joysing Doloi, Sar Rongpi,(who are no more now) P.K. Baruah were among its founders. When the academic session started from July,1965. Prof. P.K. Bhuyan was the first Principal of the college. Thus began a new venture in the field of higher education.
In the year 1967 it was taken over by the Govt. of Assam and since then the college has never looked back. Within a few years the college got its own building which provides accommodation for class rooms, office room, department staff rooms, auditorium, library etc. Besides, there are two Girls’ Hostels and one Boys’ hostel. There are 23 quarters for teachers and 8 quarters for non-teaching staff in addition to one full furnished official residence for Principal. Over the years, the college made much progress in infrastructural development out of grants received from several sources like UGC, KAAC, Govt. of India, Govt. of Assam and from MP LAD fund. The college has a beautiful botanical garden cum recreation park, one peace park, one state of art Auditorium with all facilities, Seminar Hall ( A/C), Cultural Museum etc.
Kendriya Vidyalaya (Diphu): KVD as it is popularly known as was established in the year 1978. Starting with Class I - V it slowly becoming a full fledged High school. The first principal was TI Singh. First batch passed All India Secondary School Exam in 1984. Out of 8 students in first batch, Shailesh Kumar Singh, Sanjay Gupta and Leela Agarwal scored first division. Other students of the first batch were Pushpa Mishra, Shirley Dutta, Kavery Sengupta and Bishnu Kant Bhoot.
