[edit] Facts
- Dissolution provided a dragon boss as was originally planned by id software but in a less cinematic sense for a more epic final battle.
- For Dissolution Rogue delivered on some of Quake's earlier motifs, namely Mayan and Egyptian influences, which never made it into id's commercial release.
[edit] Game Information
[edit] Monsters
- Multi-Grenade Ogres
- Functioning essentially the same as the normal Quake Ogre, these sport a different skin and armor, though it has no impact, however they launch grenades which explode into a cluster of grenades, and drop multi-rocket ammo in their backpacks.
- Electric Eels
- A complement to the rotfish, they appear as normal eels and do lightning damage without the typical discharge whenever near the player. However they are generally as ineffective as the original rotfish, though they can be gibbed unlike their predecessor.
- Phantom Swordsman
- Floating disembodied swords that charge the player slicing while emitting a white glow.
- Hell Spawn
- A variant of the existing Spawn enemy, only more powerful in general, boasting a new skin, and utilizing a different particle array on death.
- Statue
- Statues are in two forms, the original Knight and Death Knight. They use a carved stone skin and are usually found on a pedestal standing in a pose. They become vulnerable and also active once triggered, which is usually done via an entity applied to a brush such as a button or passing through a doorway.
- Wrath
- Hovering legless skeletal creatures, covered in a cloak with only red eyes visible under the hood. They chant in a way similar to Heretic's Disciples, and launch a homing explosive projectile akin to the Vore's attack. On death they fall to the ground and explode in a spray of bone.
- Minor Chthon
- Smaller scale lava creatures that look very similar to Quake's Chthon, but take damage in a normal fashion and look closer to actual lava taking a basic humanoid form. They appear only in Elemental Fury II.
[edit] Bosses
- Overlord
- The boss of episode one, and lord of the Wraths. He is in a similar garb, but is much larger, with four skeletal arms, two of which are wielding a bloody axe and mace. He summons a similar projectile as the Wrath, is flanked by numerous Wraths, and has 2.5x their normal health.
- Guardians
- Guardians are at the end of certain levels in episode two, representing the time the map takes place in. They generally form out of the ground and have a basic attack. Generally not that threatening but they make for a nice level close.
- The Dragon
- A typical flying firebreathing dragon. The fire is actually Quake's lavaballs, and you battle it in a large open cavern with pockets of lava and earthquakes. The Dragon has different health depending on the skill setting, with a lowest of 3000 and stopping at 6000.
[edit] Weapons
Dissolution does modifications of Quake's existing weapons rather than adding new ones. You can use the modifications if you have the ammo type by hitting the weapon key twice.
- Lava Nails
- Modifies the nailgun and super nailgun for substantial more damage, they appear orange and make a hissing sound when fired.
- Multi-Rockets
- Equips both the grenade and rocket launcher. For the grenade it launches a cluster bomb style grenade, like the Multi-Grenade Ogre. For the rocket it fires four rockets simultaneously in a horizontal line.
- Plasma
- Modifies the lightning gun to fire a single projectile of concentrated lightning which explodes on impact, and fires lightning on impact at any target nearby.
- Grappling Hook
- Capture the Flag only. This functions like the grappling hook in Threewave Capture the Flag only it uses a high tech looking weapon model.
[edit] Powerups
- Anti-Grav Belt
- Making a unique sound on pickup and use, for a short period of time the player is affected by gravity less, allowing them to jump higher and also fall slower without taking falling damage.
- Power Shield
- Appearing as a orange shield bearing the Quake symbol, the power shield acts like armor that is time based rather than value based.
[edit] Hazards
Dissolution adds a number of hazards to the environment beyond monsters.
- Lava Nail Shooter
- Like Quake's nail shooter, only using the new lava nails.
- Lightning Shooter
- Like Quake's nail shooter, only it arcs lightning between two points.
- Earthquake
- Shakes the players screen as well as moving them around physically. Usually accompanied with falling rock from the ceiling as provided by the level designer.
- Buzzsaw
- Buzzsaws that spin with bloody edges, usually moving on a straight track back and forth and highly distinguishable with their sound.
- Pendulum
- Swinging blade pendulums are in many maps which slice indiscriminately anything in their path, usually carrying it up and over a short distance before they fall. Can be heard from a distance by the distinct whooshing noise they make.
[edit] Multiplayer Modes
Dissolution comes with a Capture the Flag game mode and a unique Capture the Flag map which can be seen in the game's demo reel. It has variants of this game mode in terms of the number and location of the flags.
[edit] Reception
Dissolution is generally considered the more inferior of the two missionpacks, with players often citing the difference in quality of level design, despite having a variety of styles such as Greco-Roman, Mayan, and Egyptian. Some reviews frowned upon the weapon modifications, particularly the lava nails and multi-rockets as they simply made more moderately difficult enemies easy, due to it taking fewer shots to kill without introducing something new in the attack method.
