Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/Challenge

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links Challenge - the event that tests your speed, skill, and knowledge all while making Wikipedia a better encyclopedia!

The Wikipedia Disambiguation pages with links Challenge is a friendly contest designed to provide a sporting opportunity for Wikipedians to improve Wikipedia by racing against the clock - and one another - to make as many accurate repairs as possible in a one hour timespan.

Contents

[edit] The Rules

The rules of the game are simple:

  1. Participants will agree in advance on a day to hold a challenge match, and may begin their one-hour edit-run at any time on that day, from 12:01 AM (UTC) to 11:59 PM (UTC).
  2. Each contestant shall, at the beginning of their edit-run, place a notice on their user page or talk page indicating that they are participating in the challenge; in posting this notice, they will make a highly visible edit summary stating:
THIS USER IS NOW PARTICIPATING IN THE [[Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/Challenge|WIKIPEDIA:DISAMBIGUATION PAGES WITH LINKS CHALLENGE!!!]]
  3. Contestants will then accurately disambiguate as many links from disambiguation pages posted under "Pages currently in need of attention" as they can in one hour.
  4. There will be three categories of competitors:
    • Manual disambiguation: Pages must be disambiguated manually - bot assisted repairs will not be counted, and participating Wikipedians are on their honor not to use a bot during the competition.
    • Using solvedisambiguation.py or another existing bot
    • Using own bot: participating Wikipedians must submit the source for their own bot.
  5. Participants will only be credited for disambiguation of links in articles, images, categories, and templates. User, talk, and Wikipedia project page links are more likely to intentionally point to the disambig page, and some users disapprove of edits to messages they have posted on talk pages or on their user page.
  6. Inaccurately disambiguated links will not count towards their total.
  7. Participants may open as many pages as they want for editing before the contest starts, but no edits will be counted if they are saved before the start of the contest, or after one hour from the user's posting of the challenge notice.
  8. If a participant opens a page with multiple instances of the same disambig link, all instances of that link in that article must be fixed.
  9. If a participant opens a page with multiple obvious disambig links, that participant must fix all of those on the same screen as the target disambig link.
    • Note: an obvious disambig link will include any link on the list posted under "Pages currently in need of attention", or under either the "General list" or "Countries" on Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages maintenance.
  10. If a participant gets caught in an edit conflict with another racer, tough. You'll have to weigh those risks when choosing which articles to disambiguate.
  11. Obviously, the winner will be the editor who fixes the largest number of disambiguation links within the appointed hour.

[edit] The Prizes

The winners will get a nifty custom-made double-platinum barnstar-type things - currently in the imagineering process - to proudly post on their userpage.

  • I just recently started dabing, but count me in. Not that I expect to win or anything... Any idea on what day it'll be? ナイトスタリオン 04:43, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
    • Once we have a reasonable number of folks signed (say 5 or 6) we'll quick-poll everyone for preferred dates - I think this thing can possibly get off the ground by this weekend! -- BD2412 talk 04:48, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sign up to judge!

Judges will insure that challenge competitors follow the rules of the game and, most importantly, that their disambiguations are accurate. If the number of articles disambiguated is large, each judge shall pick a random sampling of edits from each participant to check for accuracy. Judges will also enforce the rule that all obvious disambig links on the same screen as the targeted link must be disambiguated as well. If it is not clear which link was targeted, the judge may assume good faith by the competitor.

Comments:

  • I've worked up a table for presenting results of judging, please take a look at it here below and leave some comments on it here or on my talk page, if you have any. (This effort may be getting towards overkill). Whitejay251 06:02, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Very nice, Whitejay!! >: Roby Wayne Talk • Hist• E@ 17:05, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Wow - that is impressive, and will look very good on the results pages for individual contests. -- BD2412 talk 17:10, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks guys! What I was thinking was that it would be one big table, with two rows for each user (the one with entrant info & the one with disqualified edits list). Then we would only need one subpage for results. Oh, you meant one page for each division didn't you?Whitejay251 20:23, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually, I meant one page for each competition - I was thinking that if we can get enough editors interested, we could have an event every few weeks - the results would be posted on a page for the event on that specific date, e.g. "Disambiguation pages with links/Challenge-Oct. 10", "Disambiguation pages with links/Challenge-Nov. 05", etc. Of course, I may be getting ahead of myself - we have to see if it works at all to begin with! -- BD2412 talk 20:44, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
