DJ Quixotic

DJ Quixotic (the stage name of Carlos Bonilla) - often referred to as Quix or just Quixotic - is a Los Angeles based dj/producer notably in the turntablist/scratch dj realm. He made a name for himself by being the first DJ from DC to win the Washington DC Regional Championships and thus representing the city in the 2001 United States DJ Championships. He later placed Top 4 in the nation at the 2004 USA Championships by manipulating and scratching records by Queen and Jimi Hendrix. He qualified by being the first east coast DJ to be crowned the Los Angeles Champion.

Quix is also known for his club sets and live performances where he scratches rock with hiphop and is known to "cover" or "recreate" the Tracy Chapman song "Fast Car" using a tone record and manipulating the speed of the platter to create the notes.

Recently rumored to have worked with Lauryn Hill but has yet to publicly announce this. He reportedly dropped hints on his MySpace page and his blog [1] page. An as yet released interview was conducted by Downhillbattle.org[2] writer Gino Sorcirelli where he talks about his time with Lauryn Hill.

As a DJ he mainly mixes, scratches and fuses hiphop with all forms of genres including (but not limited to) rock, soul, punk, reggae, house, techno, drum and bass.. He has a passion for punk rock and soul that is evident in his production and in his mix CD "The Demonstration". As a producer/artist, Quix focuses on rhythm heavy double timed drum patterns. Often his songs change tempo mid way, then come back to normal towards the end or last chorus. He mainly uses software to produce music favoring Propellerhead's Reason. But he is also known to use a mouse and a simple program like Sony Vegas as well.

In 2003 Quix met DJ Defect at an LA dj battle and the two began a friendship and production collaboration that would be known as The Phonosapiens. Although a lot of songs have been recorded, an official release has yet to be made. DJ Defect also worked with Quixotic on the Lauryn Hill project.

Quixotic is also an aspiring filmmaker/editor (under the name Carlos "Quix" Bonilla[3]) having attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Film School and directed a commercial for Avatar Records on top of completing a short film titled Push The Button. He cites Baz Luhrman, Rob Zombie and John Ottman as inspirations.

He belongs to a collective of dj/turntablists named The Trooperz.

Having been raised primarily in the Washington DC area, Quix and the rest of the Trooperz set forth a dj/turntablist movement in the DC area that still continues to this day. Some claim the DC area is one of -- if not the best turntablist scenes currently in the US. They shared and helped create an environment where all dj's in the area practiced and built upon each other's respective knowledge, a practice that has created numerous champions.

Quixotic gets his name from the classic work of literature "Don Quixote". A nickname from a highschool classmate.
