Megatriorchis doriae Salvadori & D'Albertis, 1875 |
The Doria's Goshawk, Megatriorchis doriae is a large, up to 69cm long, greyish brown raptor and is among one of the biggest hawk species though not part of the "True Hawks". They have a black-barred crown and upperparts plumage, dark brown iris, blackish bill, greenish yellow legs, a black streak behind eye and whitish below. Both sexes are similar. The female is a slightly larger than the male.
The only member of monotypic genus Megatriorchis, the Doria's Goshawk is confined and endemic to lowland rainforests of New Guinea and Batanta Island off western New Guinea. The diet consists mainly of birds, including the Lesser Bird of Paradise and other small animals.
The name commemorates the Italian naturalist Giacomo Doria.
Due to ongoing habitat lost, the Doria's Goshawk is evaluated as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix II of CITES.
