Drones Club
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fictional Drones Club, a gentlemen's club located in Dover Street, London (where a real club, the Arts Club, is based), was created by English comic novelist P. G. Wodehouse. It features in many of his Jeeves and Wooster and Blandings Castle stories.
A drone is a male bee that does no work, living off the labour of others, which aptly describes the attitude toward labour held by most of the rich, idle young men who are members of the Drones Club. But the drones have the most most important job in the hive-- they impregnate the queen.
Prominent Drones include:
- Bertram "Bertie" Wooster
- Richard "Bingo" Little
- Augustus "Gussie" Fink-Nottle
- Cyril "Barmy" Fotheringay-Phipps (pronounced fungy-fipps)
- Oofy Prosser
- Freddie Widgeon
- Claude "Catsmeat" Potter-Pirbright
- Pongo Twistleton
- Boko Fittleworth
- Hildebrand "Tuppy" Glossop
- Ronald Eustace Psmith
[edit] Drones Club today
A members-only The Drones Club exists in London. Previously owned by Marco Pierre White and Piers Adam, the Club was purchased by Ben Goldsmith, the youngest son of Sir James Goldsmith, in 2004. There are actually two Drones Clubs: one on Pont Street and a smaller club on St George's Street. The current chef is the Italian Massimo Tagliaferri, who used to work with Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's. Current membership includes pop stars, peers, CEOs and princesses. The Drones Club is also a name of a Belgian P.G. Wodehouse fanclub.
