From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Drug Discovery is a process that usually proceeds through the scientific method. A disease is identified and several processes can be used towards discovering and identifying a treatment for that disease:
- Small molecule treatments
- Biological entity treatments (such as proteins or nucleic acids)
- Combination treatments
In most cases, a drug discovery process, such as the typical process of Drug Discovery Hit to Lead is concerned specifically with technologies for large-scale High-throughput screening or High Content Screening against a particular biological assay such as an in vitro or in vivo model of the disease. Disciplines such as chemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and information technology all have important roles to play in the process.
These technologies and methods in Drug Discovery are collectively used in a unique manner and have particular methods applied in this process.
