Duchesne College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duchesne College is located within the University of Queensland's St Lucia Campus, among nine other university residential colleges. Duchesne College was founded in 1937 by the collaboration of the University and the Religious of the Sacred Heart, at the direct wish of His Grace, Archbishop Duhig. The college was initially opened at Stuartholme College in Toowong, until a new collegiate building was constructed at the university in St Lucia in 1959.
Named after Philippine Duchesne, a valiant French woman who was instrumental in bringing the Society of the Sacred Heart to America from France, Duchesne College stands as one of three all-female colleges on the campus and is acknowledged as being the most spirited college. This spirit is a result of the generations of events that have taken place behind the brick walls of its façade, which have invested the place with sacred experiences and meaning. The college accommodates 150 students, within an environment which fosters the development of the individual in relation to the community, and promotes an atmosphere conducive to the living of academic and Christian values.
During its lifetime, Duchesne College has become a place and a home for a vast number of students. Its sense of place has clearly been the foundation for the numerous memories and many past students have expressed that Duchesne College will always remain in a special place within their hearts.
In 2006, the college elected a new principal; Mrs Nanette Kay
