Dutta (also spelled Datta and Dutt) is an Indian family name. The name is common among Bengalis, Konkanis and Punjabis. It is a corruption of the word Aditya which means sun in Sanskrit.

Punjabi Duttas (দত্ত: dôtto) are from the Kayastha clan. Some Duttas are also Vaid Brahmins of Bengal. In that case, they generally use the compound surname Duttagupta or Duttasharma or only use Dutta. There are also Dutta from Baisya (SwarnaVanik & GandhaBanik) class.
