- Caption: General Nivelle. Having retaken Forts Douaumont and Vaux at Verdun when acting under Pétain in the late autumn of 1916, Nivelle, in the following year, was made Commander-in-Chief of French armies in the offensive in Champagne, but was afterward superseded.
