[edit] Plot
The 15th squad has been investigating a series of robberies involving prostitution ("Murphy jobs"). The latest victim (Mark Schneider) claims that he was simply carjacked, but Simone doesn't believe him; the crime occurred in an area known for prostitution and the victim was not wearing pants. When Sipowicz arrives, Bobby fills him in on the case; Andy suggests that they do their interview at the victim's home, in front of his wife and children. This prompts the victim to admit that he was indeed rolled by the hooker and her pimp.
In the meantime, Medavoy and Martinez are canvassing the area where the crime took place, when a woman (Gina Torres) runs up to them asking if they are cops and telling them about a bar being held up. The pair draw their sidearms and rush to investigate.
Inside the bar, they find two men on opposite sides of the bar counter. They hold up their hands, but one of them claims to be "on the job" (a policeman). Martinez demands to see his shield, and the man shows it to them. He acts offended that even after showing them his shield, they still have their guns drawn on him, and accuses them of not believing him because he is black. Medavoy and Martinez reluctantly lower their guns, at which time another man enters the room, shooting at the detectives. The two men run out the back door, with Medavoy and Martinez in pursuit.
A gunfight ensues in the alley behind the bar. Medavoy shoots one of the suspects and Martinez is shot in the gut. Martinez tries calling for an ambulance, but Medavoy feels he can get him to Bellevue faster in their car.
Lt. Fancy rushes to the hospital while the rest of the squad goes to the scene of the shooting. Sipowicz and Simone interview the bar owner (Dominic Hoffman); he doesn't speak much English, but the detectives quickly firgure out that the bar is mixed up with the numbers rackets, and the robbers were there to take the $3,000 in proceeds that were in the till. Russell tells the other detectives that she saw someone diving into a Dumpster in the alley.
The detectives come out into the alley with their guns drawn, demanding that the suspect show himself. He comes out peacefully; Russell finds a gun in the Dumpster that looks like the one used to shoot Martinez. Simone and Sipowicz beat on the suspect to give up the name of his accomplice; Diane sees all of the civilians watching the beating and suggests that they take him over to the hospital.
At the hospital, both Medavoy and Martinez identify the suspect, Antonio (Isaiah Washington) as the shooter. Antonio tells the detectives who his accomplice is; they make him beep him and set up a meeting before they allow him to get his gunshot wound treated.
Sipowicz and Simone go to a poolhall to pick him up. He turns out to be Nathan Stackhouse (Steven Williams), a corrections officer at Rikers Island. The detective smell a rat when Stackhouse demands to speak with Assistant District Attorney Maury Abrams (Charles Levin), instead of asking for his own lawyer. Abrams explains to Lt. Fancy, Inspector Aiello (Andy Romano), Simone and Sipowicz that Stackhouse is in the center of a corruption investigation that will "blow the roof off" of Rikers. He wants Stackhouse released, saying that his shift begins in a few hours.
Needless to say, Simone and Sipowicz are highly skeptical of Abrams' story. They briefly speak with Inspector Hampton (Mel Winkler), who had accompanied Abrams to the precinct. Hampton worked with Stackhouse in the past, and told the detectives that Stackhouse had been stringing Abrams along with the investigation for several months with nothing to show for it.
Simone decides to leak this information to the press. He calls up his ex-girlfriend, Benita Alden (Melina Kanakaredes), and tells her about what happened. He gives her Hampton's phone number. Later, Abrams returns to the detective squad, demanding to know why a reporter was calling him about Stackhouse. He is furious that his work had been for nothing, but says that they can go ahead and rearrest Stackhouse.
In the meantime, Martinez is laying on a bed at Bellevue, with Lesniak and Medavoy keeping him company. He is worried that he may lose the use of his legs. The neurologist (Aaron Lustig) comes by to check on him periodically, but Martinez fears that nothing is improving. Dr. Mondzac (Titus Welliver) the emergency room physician who treated his gunshot wound looks in on him; Martinez expresses his concerns. When the neurologist returns, he tests Martinez's leg and torso and finds that his nerves are recovering. Elated, Martinez decides to call his parents.
