Earl of Glencairn

The title of Earl of Glencairn was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1488 and became dormant upon the death of the fourteenth earl in 1796. The earls bore the subsidiary title of Lord Kilmaurs (1469).
On the death of the fourteenth earl, there existing no original patent of creation nor a given remainder in the various confirmations in title of previous earls the title became dormant. Attempts were made to claim the title by the heir male but this was dismissed by the Committee for Privilages in 1797.
