Earthwar

The Earthwar was an ambitious 5-issue storyline in the comic book Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes that ran from issues #241-245.
The story was written by Paul Levitz, and the pencils were initially by James Sherman, inked by Bob McLeod. After two issues, Sherman was replaced by Joe Staton.
The storyline describes how attempts at a peace treaty between the United Planets and the Dominators are sabotaged, then thrown completely off course when the UP is invaded by the Khunds. Legionnaires investigate several leads in various parts of the galaxy, eventually discovering there are other forces manipulating the war.
After a number of incidents, the Legion discovers a series of imposters and puppets implicating in turn the Dominators, then the Khunds, then the Dark Circle and finally Mordru behind the entire plot.
In the final issue Mordru has conquered the Earth and battles the few remaining free Legionnaires until they are freed, and in a final battle Mordru is defeated when Element Lad starts to transmute the air around Mordru into soil, triggering his phobia of being buried alive.
The Earthwar saga is a fan favorite, and one mentioned as one of the best Legion storylines of all time, along with the Great Darkness Saga and the Legion of Super-Villains saga.
