[edit] History
ETBU is situated on the highest point in Harrison County, on the former site of the Van Zandt Plantation. ETBU was founded as the College of Marshall in 1912 after a campaign to create a Southern Baptist college in East Texas. The campus' first building, Marshall Hall, was completed in 1916. It was designed to house a gymnasium, library, chapel/theatre, administrative offices, and all classrooms. The College of Marshall opened the following year in 1917 as a two year junior college and academy.
Some controversy arose in the early years of the institution, surrounding the forming of a "KKK" club. Being that Marshall is a prodominately African American community, this scared off some of the young negros yearning to learn. The schools attendance droppped dramatically, in the later years the school has rebounded well. The school recently accepted a football program, the has brought back in the minorities looking to boost stats before they move onto 4 year universities, the weak conference ETBU is a part of makes the school a perfect springboard.
[edit] Accreditation
In 1957, ETBU became an accredited member of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.[2] The accreditation was reaffirmed in 1998. Currently, ETBU also is accredited by the The Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas[3], the Commissions of Collegiate Nursing Education[4], and National Association of Schools of Music[5].
