Talk:Eastern Hemisphere

[edit] Synonyms?
A previous version implied that Western World and Western Hemisphere are synonyms. This is not the case. Even this article and that of Western World agree with the definition I usually use: Europe and european derived cultures (especially western Europe). Robertbrockway Dec 2, 2004 (UTC).
[edit] Little-used?
"The Eastern Hemisphere of the Earth is a little-used concept because there is no obvious demarcation line separating it"
In my experience, that's not true at all. The Eastern/Western Hemisphere division is talked about a lot. And there's a perfectly obvious demarcation line; the prime meridian on one side and the international date line on the other. Kundor 21:58, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)
- I agree; it's a common phrase, and a commoner concept. I have to run right now, but I would like to change it. — Pekinensis 19:26, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Definition
DavidWBrooks, I am very surprised that this term could be used to exclude Western Europe; could you provide a reference or some examples?
For what it's worth, the Polish Wikipedia takes the dividing lines to be 0° and 180°, while the Chinese Wikipedia takes them to be 20°W and 160°E, so as to more neatly divide the intended continents.

- Well, since the prime meridian excludes most of Britain and Spain, all of Ireland and Portugal (and Iceland), plus one-fifth of France, the Polish wikipedia removed about a third of Western Europe! But that's not quite what I wrote, is it?
- Certainly the concept of the Western Hemisphere (in a political, "western world" sense) is often used to include western Europe, at least in the US. But now that you have prodded me, I must admit I've never encountered the opposite usage - probably because "eastern hemisphere", unlike its counterpart, is not a concept often encountered here, for reasons I'm not quite sure of. So I'm going to have to backtrack on the article ... - DavidWBrooks 23:13, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

- I don't believe Eastern Hemisphere is a much-used concept. Also the first sentence of this article is contradictory to the last one of the Western Hemisphere, so I'll change it to something more neutral. --Odoakerston 09:23, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also I don't see why the prime meridian going through parts of Europe "dilutes" its use for "cartography"???--Odoakerston 09:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
