Yes, It's badly written by myself, but it's legitimate. The subject of Ecopolises are the cover article in this weeks New Scientist Magazine. It doesn't need deleting, it needs improving. Robinoke 21:37, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Downton, Sociopolis, and various edits
I did some editing and added some extra information. I don’t know if Paul Downton was the first person to use the word ecopolis, but that’s the earliest source I could find. Personally I hadn’t heard the word until I read the New Scientist article; it was just google that led me to Downton. The NS article did talk about megacities but it didn’t specify a minimum size for an ecopolis, so I removed the reference to cities over 10 million. I added some info on Sociópolis in Valencia, which was mentioned in the NS editorial of the same issue. I wonder though if there are distinct differences between an ecopolis and an ecocity or sustainable city, enough to merit separate articles. Fionah 16:23, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think it is the city size that makes it distinct from an ecocity. As with many neologisms the etemology of the constiuent parts isnt really taken faithfully into account. "Polis" means city, but thanks to words like "metropolis" (mother-city), metro is assumed to mean city and polis to mean a big one. So perhaps its a flaw in the laguage, but I'm sure I found a mention of city size in its definition. Perhaps a merge with eco-city is in order with a mention of Ecopolis being the preferred term for larger versions. Robinoke 13:22, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- I reacted to the portmanteau description. I instinctively interpret it as "ecology" and "metropolis", where "eco" sounds similar to "metro" and brings up the immediate association. Thus the distinction between ecovillage, ecocity and ecopolis are quite clear. Each level adds new challenges and requires new solutions, so I hold the view that the different articles are useful. clacke 15:46, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
