Edison Township Public Schools

The Edison Township Public Schools is a comprehensive community public school system, serving students in Kindergarten through 12th grade from Edison, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The school district has 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools that are part of the district, serving a culturally diverse student population of over 13,000. The district has a professional staff of over 1,000 teachers and administrators, most of who hold advanced degrees.

The Edison Board of Education has moved to ban all evening outdoor sporting events in favor of moving them to late-afternoons in a bid to cut down on “Student Violence” despite objections of both parents and players^[1].

Schools in the district (together with 2003-04 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) include the following:

The two public high schools separate the South and North ends of Edison. In the Edison High School zone to the south, there are six K - 5 elementary schools: Benjamin Franklin Elementary, with 584 students; James Monroe Elementary, with 392 students; John Marshall Elementary, with 473 students; Lincoln Elementary, with 745 students; Lindeneau Elementary, with 512 students; and Washington Elementary, with 537 students. John Marshall, Lindenau, and Washington graduates attend Thomas Jefferson Middle School which has 667 students in grades 6 - 8. James Monroe, Benjamin Franklin, and Lincoln graduates go to Herbert Hoover Middle School with 808 students in grades 6 - 8. Thomas Jefferson and Herbert Hoover graduates go to Edison High School, which houses 1,939 students in grades 9-12.

In the J.P. Stevens High School zone there are five K-5 elementary schools. They are James Madison Primary School, with 430 students in K-2, who then move on to James Madison Intermediate School, which has 527 students in grades 3-5; Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary with 472 students; Menlo Park Elementary, with 788 students; and Woodbrook Elementary. Menlo Park and Woodbrook graduates go to Woodrow Wilson Middle School with 624 students in grades 6-8. James Madison Intermediate and MLK Jr. graduates go to John Adams Middle School, which has 747 students in grades 6-8. Woodrow Wilson Middle School and John Adams Middle School graduates move on to J.P. Stevens High School, which has an enrollment of 2,160 students in grades 9-12.

The schools in the Southern end of the township are largely Caucasian (47%). The schools in the northern end of the town, however, are largely Asian-American (57%), with only 35% of students being Caucasian.

J.P. Stevens was ranked 82nd in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.^[2]

Menlo Park is the third largest public school in Edison, even larger than any of the 4 middle schools. Overcrowding has become a huge problem, so Edison is being redistricted. Some students were redistricted to schools in south Edison, which angered parents. As J.P. Stevens High School (north) is considered a better school than Edison High (south), home values in the area are believed to have decreased.^{[citation needed]}
