Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk

Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk was born 5 June 1685/6 the son of Lord Thomas Howard and Mary Elizabeth Savile. He succeeded to the title of 18th Baron Furnivall and of 9th Duke of Norfolk in 1732, after the death of his brother, Thomas Howard, 8th Duke of Norfolk.

He married Mary Blount (before 1712-1773), daughter of Edward Blount and Anne Guise, on 26 November 1727. The Duchess died on 27 May 1773. Edward died on 20 September 1777 at age 91, without a male heir. Upon Edward Howard's death, several of his titles (the Dukedom of Norfolk, the Earldoms of Norfolk, Arundel and Surrey, and the Barony of Maltravers) passed to his kinsman, Charles Howard, 10th Duke of Norfolk. The Earldom of Norwich and Barony of Howard of Castle Rising, which were created for his grandfather, the 6th Duke of Norfolk, became extinct. Finally, three old English baronies by writ fell into abeyance among the daughters of his younger brother.

James Cook named Norfolk Island in honour of the Duchess of Norfolk in 1774, although he did not know at the time that she was already dead.
