‘’’Edward (Ed) Mezvinsky’’’ (born January 17, 1937) was an American Democratic U.S. representative from 1973-77 for Iowa’s 1st District. He was a lawyer before entering politics. He was defeated for reelection in 1976. He sat on the House Judiciary Committee and voted for the impeachment of President Nixon for his activities in the Watergate scandal.
After serving in Congress, Mezvinsky worked at the United Nations Commission for Human Rights until 1979. He then moved to Pennsylvania to be with his wife, Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky. He was chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee before making a failed run for state attorney general in 1988 and for the nomination for state lieutenant governor in 1990.
Mezvinsky was indicted in March 2001 and later pled guilty to 31 of 69 charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud. Nearly $10 million was involved in the crimes. The plea agreement stated that in committing his crimes, "He boasted to many [victims], for example, of a close personal friendship with President and Mrs. Clinton and of his son's friendship with Chelsea Clinton at Stanford University."
