Edyta Bartosiewicz (born January 11, 1966 in Warsaw) is a Polish rock singer, composer and songwriter. Her career has been awarded by five Fryderyks. In Poland, she's known for her highly reflective and unusual lyrics.

[edit] Career overview

Edyta's first appearance on a commercial music record was in 1990, when the LP The Big Beat was released. Edyta recorded it with her band, Holloee Poloy. It was hardly a commercial success, but it succeeded in catching the eye of music critics, who have noticed Edyta's voice and charismatic position in the band. Edyta decided to quit the band after - as she says herself - very heavy resistance to her composing and songwriting style. She wanted to concentrate on a solo career.

The year 1992 saw the release of her album Love. It was sung entirely in English and received the Gold status after having sold 67 thousand copies. The album was also released in Western Europe by the record company Chrysalis, but wasn't noticed on this market at all.

In 1994, the album Sen was released. It was recorded with a completely new band and is sung mostly in Polish. The musical side of this album can be described as a variable one. The album Sen was also the first one to have a promotional tour. Nine concerts were given in nine biggest Polish cities. The tour ended with a huge success, as well as the album, which has received the Platinum award after selling over 300 thousand copies. Edyta herself has been announced the best singer by the readers of Polish magazine Tylko Rock, and the song Sen, still being one of her best known, has been considered to be the most popular one.

By the beginning of July 1995, Edyta's new single could be heard on the radio, called Szał. It was the first one to promote her new album, Szok'n'Show. Edyta considers this one as her most ambitious one, which was recorded because of having a lot of new ideas after recording her previous album. For the purpose of promoting the album, Edyta visited 13 biggest cities of Poland. The record was an enormous commercial success - it was announced Platinum after selling around 280 thousand copies. The singer has received the 1995 Fryderyk, won the best artist and best album awards, given to her by the readers of Polish magazine Tylko Rock.

After two years of waiting, Edyta's fourth album, Dziecko was released, promoted by the very widely known single Jenny and an another tour around Poland, as well as three performances in United States and Canada. The album was again awarded Platinum (200 thousand sold copies) and by the Fryderyk, for the best rock album. According to the Polish magazine Machina, issue 03/02, this album is the most honest one Polish rock music has ever seen.

1998 was the year when Wodospady, Edyta's latest up to date album, was released. It's considered to be the most mature one in her career. As opposed to her previous records, this one wasn't supported by a promotional tour. It sold in a volume of around 75 thousand copies and has been announced Gold. Miłość jak ogień was one of the singles from this album, and still remains as one of Edyta's best known songs.

Edyta decided to break up with her record company, Universal Music Polska in 1999. Dziś są moje urodziny, a best of compilation album, was the result of this decision.

Until then, Edyta has remained fairly silent. Apart from the 2001 single Opowieść, 2002 single Niewinność (which was intended to promote her new album, which was never released) and 2004 duo with Krzysztof Krawczyk in the song Trudno tak...(razem być nam ze sobą), she doesn't create new music.

Quite unexpectably, she appeared on the Festival of Magic Music, on 5 June 2005, on the Cracovian Market Square. She sang her two best known songs - Jenny and Ostatni. In September 2005, she took part in a performance celebrating the 10th anniversary of a Polish group Myslovitz.
