[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was Øygir - and this was originally the name of a fjord (now Eidsfjorden). The name of the fjord is probably derived from a rivername *Aug, and this again is derived from the word öfugr 'backwards'. The actual river (now called Eidselva) are running in meanders - and from certain points it can seem to run backwards.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times. It shows the head of a horse. The region is known for its very own race of horses, called the fjording, which is characterised by its white and black mane.
