El Campo is a city in Wharton County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,945 at the 2000 census.

El Campo is located at 29°11′48″N, 96°16′24″W (29.196611, -96.273471)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.3 km² (7.5 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 10,945 people,(this number is closer to about 14,000 now, in 2007) 3,931 households, and 2,810 families residing in the city. The population density was 565.7/km² (1,465.8/mi²). There were 4,312 housing units at an average density of 222.9/km² (577.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 69.07% White, 11.88% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 16.66% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.68% of the population.

There were 3,931 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% were married couples living together, 13.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.31.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,694, and the median income for a family was $35,155. Males had a median income of $27,416 versus $18,872 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,464. About 16.5% of families and 20.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.1% of those under age 18 and 17.1% of those age 65 or over.

A Super Walmart was opened up a few years ago. HEB is the other local Grocery store. Sutherland's and McCoy's offer building supplies (think Home Depot, but smaller)
