El Clásico (Mexico)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
El Clásico (English: the classic), also often named El Superclásico (superclassic), is the name for the rivalry between two Mexican football teams: Guadalajara and Club América. The two teams are among the most succesful clubs in Mexico, Chivas has won eleven championships, the most by any team, with America following closely with ten.
Chivas is known for a long-standing tradition of fielding only Mexican-born players, contrasting with América, who hires foreigners. América is owned by Televisa, the main communications company in México, and thus have a huge fan base in the whole country although Guadalajara also have a larger supporter base nationwide, and said to be the most popular team in Mexico. Chivas is owned by Jorge Vergara through his company Omnilife.
This match is sometimes seen as the match of the 'capitalinos', the inhabitants of Mexico City, versus the 'provincianos', the people from the rest of the country. As Mexico City holds most of the economic and political power, some resentment boils over. However, not all 'provincianos' share this view, particularly those living in the northern city of Monterrey who also have a share of economical power in the country, their own derby, and their own particular rivalry with Mexico City.
The matches tend to be very colorful, as both Estadio Azteca in México City and Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara have a crowd of fans. Also, both teams have large followers in Mexico. In addition, Club Guadalajara is the only team in Mexico to only field Mexican-born players, where Club America fields both Mexican and foreign players. The two teams are widely considered to be the most popular Mexican clubs, and both count with a large fan base in Mexico and around throughout the world including the United States. The two teams count with a large fan base in Mexico and around the world especially in the southern United States which has seen the expansion of one branch of these teams into the American Major League Soccer with the Chivas USA.
In the last season Apertura 2006, Chivas defeated Club America 2-0 in the Estadio Jalisco, and afterwards, these two teams saw themselves in the Semifinals, where Guadalajara defeated America 2-0 in the first leg, and 0-0 in the 2nd leg.
