El Presidente Shows
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
El Presidente have become known for their extravagant live shows but it all began when lead singer Dante Gizzi started performing live under the name El Presidente in 2002, with one of their first gigs on the T Break stage at T In The Park. As there were no band members at this time, the live gigs would literally consist of Dante, cigar in hand, with a backing track. In 2003 he supported JJ Gilmor and others. Dawn Zhu became El Presidente's drummer in 2004, alongside other ex-members that include: Dante's brother Giuliano Gizzi on Guitar, Emma Murphey on Keyboards and Backing Vocals, Liam Nugent and Ross Galloway.
The current line up was formed late 2004 (December-ish). They played their first gig at Leeds Cockpit on 17 January 2005 on the Rocket Tour, with support from Stagger-Lee. After eight gigs They were asked to play Glastonbury. In April/May 2005 They supported Duran Duran, Kasabian and Oasis (After Liam personally asked them whilst filming a performance on GMTV. In June it was time for their performance at Glastonbury, but things did not go to plan. On Thursday the weather was beautiful sun and not a cloud in the sky. But then Friday came. And so did the rain. Fields flooded and tents were washed away, and so was the John Peel stage (The stage El Presidente were set to play on). The whole stage flooded and El Presidente's set was cancelled along with a few other bands including The Dead 60's. Other the summer of 2005, El Pres played tremendous sets at T In he Park, V festival, Bestival, Tartan Heart Festival, Global Gathering and more.
In early September they supported Jamiroquai at places like Dublin Point, Manchester MEN Arena and Glasgow's SECC . In late September/October to promote their début album and their 3rd full release, Rocket, they underwent a full U.K tour. They played mostly small venues including Kings College, The Garage in Glasgow and Manchester Academy. The tour was a large success, and raised the bands profile even more. After the tour in England they went on to Japan for a three week tour/promotional visit. They played live gigs, showcase shows (where over 700 of Japan's Top Radio DJ's were invited) and in-store sessions. They also shot the Turn This Thing Around video there.
In December they did a short tour of France then returned to Glasgow on the 18th to play their Homecoming Gig at the Barrowlands in front of around 2000 fans. The set list was by far the longest the band had ever played, including all the songs off the bands début album, a B-side and two covers. On New Years Eve 2005 they played to there largest ever crowed, over 20,000 at The Royal Street Party at Hogmanay alongside Texas and K.T. Tunstall.
They started 2006 by performing on burns night at the opening of XFM Scotland. Then in February to promote their 4th single Turn This Thing Around they underwent another U.K tour playing at Edinburgh Liquid Room on the 3rd, Aberdeen Moshulu on the 5th , Manchester Hop & Grape on the 6th, Birmingham Academy on the 7th and London Dingwalls on the 9th of Feb. Then on March 11 they played a joint show with Kubb and Embrace at the Southampton Guildhall.
In May 2006 they went back to Japan for a three date tour, which was particularly special as for one song in their set the band members would switch instruments. One photo shows Laura on lead vocals, Thomas Playing drums and Dawn playing Keyboards.
On July 8, 2006 they performed their headline set on the Main Stage at T In The Park. Their set was only 40 minutes long, being second on stage, but they still managed to perform one new song called Late Night Binges. The next day the band flew out to France for their performance at the French music festival "Solidays Festival". On July 23, El Presidente supported Texas at Nimes in Paris.
On July 29 Dante played a DJing set at XFM's Weekender (With An All Night BBQ!!!). On August 12/13th the band performed at one of Japan's biggest festivals, The Summer Sonic Festival. On 31 August they played a set at the Project Scotland gig, alongside Drive By Argument and Mylo.
In November the band embarked on a 8-date French tour. A new song, Reach Out was premired on this tour.
On may 25th they are set to play the main stage at the Skye music festival.
