Elkmont, Tennessee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elkmont was a former community in the Great Smoky Mountains of far eastern Tennessee. It was named for the numerous elk which once inhabited the area. Most activity at Elkmont was related to logging, but the Wonderland Hotel also operated there from 1912.
Now within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Elkmont is a popular campground, and a historic district. In 1994, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wonderland Hotel has recently been torn down. The cabins of Elkmont are scheduled for demolition as well.
Elkmont is on the Little River, which flows down to Townsend along the Little River Road, within the park.
