Talk:Emperor Kammu

"Kanmu" or "Kammu", which one is right? Ryuch 07:28, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC) There are many systems of romanization, that is, writing foreign words using the Roman alphabet. One system, which is conventional with the Japanese as well as foreign students learning Japanese, especially from a linguistic perspective, would spell it "Kanmu." Another system, which serves to communicate pronunciation to readers who don't speak Japanese, would write it "Kammu." So rather than a matter of right and wrong, it's a matter of purpose and readership. Personally, I believe "Kammu" better suits me, although "Kanmu" is more conventional among the Japanese and scholars.
