Engineers Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Institution of Engineers Australia, often shortened to IEAust, is a professional body and not-for-profit organization dedicated to being the national forum for the advancement of the engineering field within Australia. It has over 79,000 members coming from all engineering disciplines, 27,000 of whom are students.
The organization began in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, recognizing the need for a single body to represent engineers, rather than the numerous smaller organizations that existed then. Its first council meeting was held in 1919, electing William Henry Warren of the University of Sydney as the Engineers Australia's first President.
The current patron of Engineers Australia is Australia's Governor-General, Major General Michael Jeffery.
