Anna Cora Mowatt Ritchie(1819-1870) was a playwright, public reader, actress, and poet.
[edit] Childhood
Anna Cora Ogden was born in Bordeaux, France, March 5, 1819. She was the tenth of fourteen children. Her father was Samuel Gouveneur Ogden(1779-1860), a merchant from New York, when Anna was born, he was working in France as an agent for foreign exporters. Her mother was Eliza Lewis Ogden (1785-1836), who was the granddaughter of Francis Lewis, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence.
In 1826, when Anna was six years old, the Ogden family returned to America on a ship called the Brandt, which was shipwrecked in a storm. During the storm, one of her brothers was lost at sea. Anna claimed that due to prolonged exposure to the bad weather while the family awaited rescue, she developed respiratory problems that were to plague her for the rest of her life.
Anna was interested in the stage from childhood, by the age of ten she had read all of Shakespere's plays. She also wrote poetry from an early age and when she was fourteen, she staged a translation of Voltaire's play, Alzire, in her families home in Flatbush, NY.
