Esplanade, Calcutta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Esplanade is an area in central Kolkata. This is not a conventional Esplanade in the sense that the place is not exactly situated alongside a waterbody. However, the river Ganges, also known as the Ganga or the Hooghly, is located nearby.
This Esplanade is located in the heart of the city and is one of the busiest portions.
The Esplanade is also a major station in the underground Calcutta Metro Railway. It was one of the first stations to begin operations when the underground railway system started functioning in Calcutta.
[edit] Location
The Esplanade area has probably shifted its original historical position. At present the area may be defined starting from the crossing of C.R.Avenue and Lenin Sarani extending southwards through J.L.Neheru-S.N.Banerjee road crossing up to some distance.
Again Esplanade East is the portion to the east of the area described.
