Esther is a given name. It may derive from the Persian stara (star) but is otherwise associated with the Hebrew Hadassah (bride). It is also suggested that it derives from Ishtar, Babylonian-Assyrian goddess of love. It was adopted as an English name in the 17th Century.
Diminutive forms are: Ess, Essa, Esta, Ester, Ettie, Etty, Hester, Hettie.
