ETomi
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- The correct title of this article is eTomi. The initial letter is shown capitalized due to technical restrictions.
eTomi (also 360share) is the name of two P2P applications and possibly a company. On the P2P scene it's frequently regarded as a scam.
[edit] Modus Operandi
eTomi advertisements generally consist of deceptive search engine ads and typosquatting. The websites promise "legal" downloads for a certain fee. What they really offer are modified and renamed open source P2P programs. eTomi legally exists to offer "support" for these applications (this is usually hidden in the fine print). The support they offer is often just a copy of the wiki or other documentation from the original program's website. In the members' area, you can usually download several modified peer-to-peer applications.
[edit] Applications
eTomi and 360share are based on LimeWire and Shareaza. Both run on the Gnutella network, although Shareaza also connects to edonkey2000, BitTorrent and Gnutella2. LimeWire is written in Java and so runs on Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Solaris, and other platforms. Shareaza is a Windows only program, although it can be run in Linux on Wine.
