Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle (born November 27, 1980 in Traunstein) is a German cross country skier from Reit im Winkl who has competed since 1998. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, she won a gold in the 4 x 5 km and a silver in the Individual sprint. She also won a silver in the 4 x 5 km at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
Sachenbacher-Stehle has also won six medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a complete set of medals in the 4 x 5 km (gold: 2003, silver: 2007, bronze: 1999), two silvers in the pursuit (5 km + 10 km combined: 1999, 5 km + 5 km double: 2003), and another silver in the team sprint (2007, with Claudia Künzel-Nystad). She also has fourteen individual victories at various levels in distances up to 5 km in her career from 1998 to 2006.
She married German alpine skier Johannes Stehle in July 2005.
[edit] Controversy
Sachenbacher received a five-day suspension at the beginning of the 2006 Winter Olympics due to a high hemoglobin rate. She was one of 12 athletes given 5-day suspensions for health reasons — the International Ski Federation ruled they could not safely compete due to an abnormally high red blood cell counts.
