[edit] Let's get started

I've been impressed by the tremendous work on the page about Serial Experiments Lain. I'm looking forward working on an article with you.

[edit] Cultural depictions of Joan of Arc

Hi, thanks very much for your addition. I noticed on the Serial Experiments Lain talk page you doubted whether the listing is appropriate. Another editor added the title and I haven't seen the series. If you don't think the character in this series is patterned after Joan of Arc, please delete the entry from the list. I appreciate your help! Best wishes, Durova 04:59, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lain

First step would be to read through the article and identify anything that appears to be original research or needs a citation. I don't see any citations for anything in the article after a brief glance. Themes, Publications and other media, and Allusions all should have citations. After that is done, go found citations to back up the claims or remove the claims if a citation can't be found (see WP:CITE and WP:FOOT).

Looking at the article, I don't see a section on critical or public reception. There is also no information about Lain's influences other works or culturally. Commentary from the producer, director, creator, and/or the VAs would also be good, with proper citations. --TheFarix (Talk) 23:24, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunatly, I can't really help you with the sources unless it is from one of the backissues of Newtype USA that I have. --TheFarix (Talk) 20:26, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't really have an opinion on where the link to the list of episodes should be. It's unlikely that we'll be able to find the full text of Susan J Napier's paper on Evangelion and Lain, as the journal's official site removed the full text at the author's request. - Malkinann 07:31, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

There's no scifi wikiproject that you could ask, but maybe someone at WP:ANIME might have it, or know of english-language journals that routinely publish articles on anime and manga? Your best bet would probably be to get your hands on a copy of Napier's book. I don't know anyone who's really good at copyediting, but you could try using Tony's exercises for more help. I think you really need to split off the playstation game, because it will give the rest of the article more room to breathe. The game article may not get very much bigger, but it may later. - Malkinann 23:14, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:LainMiBs.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:LainMiBs.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Re: $yD! & Serial Experiments Lain

My appologies for bringing up the "New Messages" bar. I was patrolling the recent changes using Lupin's anti-vandal bot. A lot of serious vandalism was going on, when I goofed up with the buttons. Thus, the warning ended up on your page instead of the vandal's. Sorry for the operator error. Keep up with the great work you've been doing lately. Cheers and happy editing!--thunderboltz(Deepu) 16:31, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] redundancy page

Hi, thanks for your comments. I've incorporated your suggestion into the hint in Exercise 4e. It's exactly the processing that we want to encourage in writers (identifying opportunities for shrinking sentences), but I'm concerned that your suggestion makes the statement stronger than the original ("challenged the government" versus "has been a challenge for", which implies intermittent/among other things, rather than all-encompassing challenge). Thanks. Tony 01:42, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

I do hope that we see more of you in the FAC and FAR/C rooms. We need more language critiqueing there to raise the standards of writing on WP. Tony 15:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi, $yD!, thanks for the link on Sat-Tan. Unfortunately, it doesn't give any clear idea of the source of the information without which I can't tell whether it is just one person's view. Any ideas?

I am not sure what you meant by your comment on my talk page - could you clarify it?-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  19:43, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I certainly don't mind any mediation, in fact, I welcome help and comments from other editors - which is why I started a discussion at ANI seeking input - and there Ghirlandajo mentioned the discussion on my talk page you commented at and called your edit (presumably, see below) a 'reprimand of my behaviour'. Thus I wanted to clarify if you indeed support him and reprimand me, or did he misintepret your post; you may want to clarify that at ANI (to be more specific, Ghirla wrote: Within last hour or so, your behaviour was reprimanded by several wikipedians on your talk page. Several equals to him, M.K. and presumably you... :/ -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  22:24, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Serial Experiments Lain

Hi $yD!! (I dunno how to pronounce that.) I sincerely appreciate you asking, but I am working on one project right now, and I don't think I'll have the time before the FAC likely ends to help. Additionally, I'm not comfortable with the subject matter, so I may not be your best bet here. Have you tried asking some other people who are in the copy review business?: Deckiller, Spangineer, Rlevse. (I'm partially copying from a list I saw user SandyGeorgia leave.) Good luck, – Outriggr § 00:15, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi there SidiLemine! I think it was you who put in the request for me to copy edit Serial Experiments Lain (the note was signed by an IP, but I assumed it was you). Unfortunately, I'm kind of busy these days working on a personal project of mine (overhauling and improving Peter Jennings), and have had little time to proofread/copyedit FACs. Hopefully some other good copy editors who aren't so busy can help improve the article. Good luck with the FAC! Gzkn 03:16, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm...perhaps ALoan? That's the only user I can think of off the top of my head that Outriggr didn't mention...there are probably more out there though. Thanks for wikilinking nepotism! :) Gzkn 12:18, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Susan Napier

Hi Gwern! Thanks a lot for the offer about the article. As I say on the Lain talk page, it's issue 88 of Science Fiction Studies, that is, part 3 of volume 29. It's from November 2002. I don't have the page number, but the article name is When the Machines Stop: Fantasy, Reality, and Terminal Identity in Neon Genesis Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain, by Susan J. Napier. I appreciate the effort. Having this one would make Wikipedia the most comprehensive source about Lain on earth. If that's not what WP's about, I don't know what is. :)--SidiLemine 16:42, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

I went to my library today; alas, there were no electronic copies to be had, of any sort, because they carried Science Fiction Studies.... so I just scanned in all 17 pages or whatever. I can't put them on Wikipedia or Commons, for obvious reasons. Do you want me to email you the PNGs? If so, email me with the desired address; and remember, each PNG is about 3 megabytes, so make sure your email service can handle that. --Gwern (contribs) 03:21 7 December 2006 (GMT)
Don't know how to reduce the size and still keep it readable, I'm afraid. They should be wafting their way through the ether to you now. --Gwern (contribs) 14:38 7 December 2006 (GMT)
Did you give me the right address? I sent'em to lecomptoirdutabac@yahoo.com but all I got back was a Yahoo daemon telling me that address doesn't exist. --Gwern (contribs) 19:15 7 December 2006 (GMT)
After a lot of work, I discovered file upload services and got one to work; your magical link is to FileHO. Hope this works. --Gwern (contribs) 19:06 8 December 2006 (GMT)

I have the Napier Lain/Eva article too :-) User:GunnarRene/Sources#Science fiction. --GunnarRene 14:19, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lain FAC

Sidi, I'd be happy to assist, but this month might not be good in terms of free time. I'll see what I can do. Grm_wnr helped me a lot with Excel Saga's FAC, so perhaps drop him a line? If it doesn't make it through the first time, it seems like you've got a good basis to resubmit the nomination in a few weeks' time. I find appearances to be important in FACs, though maybe that's just me, so some thoughts you might want to consider are:

  • Reorganizing "List of SEL episodes" into an article titled "List of SEL media" and move most of the "Publications and other media" there. That would reduce the amount of text in the main article not covered by citation and also make the episode-list article a little more important in its own right.
  • Perhaps combining "Characters" and "Plot." If you go that route, I would mention only the most important voice actors in the main article, and create a table of all roles/voice-actors in "List of SEL episodes" or whatever.
  • This will vary from computer to computer based on screen-size and user-settings, but the arrangement of the large number of images in "Characters" is distracting. An alternative might be to use the image gallery function to present all of them at one go.
  • Newtype-USA did a DVD review of Lain in January 2005, so see if you can find a friend or editor who has that copy to cite in the article. I think Nihonjoe has all of the Newtypes-USA, so poke around his userpage.

I know these are significant changes, and my suggestions have proven controversial in past FACs, so you might want to discuss these with other editors involved in the nomination. Nevertheless, doing the first two helped me get Excel Saga featured. I hope these help! If I have time, I'll have a try at copy-editing.--Monocrat 17:17, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Will be happy to help. I'll give the writing a going-over some time this evening. Soo

[edit] Serial Experiment Lain FAC

Hi Sidi, nice of you to ask. The article certainly needs a lot of FAC level copyediting. I won't have time in the near future, but will try to add some comments and make some changes on the weekend. I recommend that you close the FAC and resubmit it though once changes have been made. There seems to be an awful lot of areas where you could improve this article. That's my 2 cents.--P-Chan 13:54, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Conference article

Hiya. I in no way assumed you were an islamist-negationist nazi (great phrase, btw!). As to your thoughts about the article being POV, I respectfully disagree. The article accurately describes the conference and its attendees. The student protests, for example: I saw an article that saiod "thousands". The fact that even one went on record as saying that they were in part caused by this conference justifies placing that in the article (IMO). Iran is not a place where people can speak freely, so that alone makes it noteworthy. This is a fun article to edit, I must say. The POV I see in the article is the mirroring of the conference itself. It is organized and attended by hate-mongering neo-Nazi anti-Semitic bigots. We don't have do do anything to shift POV--they did it for us! Jeffpw 13:35, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm sure I could find supporters of the conference, but it wouldn't change the thrust. I mean, anyone supporting this debacle would most probably be identified as anti-Semitic by several sources already, and that would be put next to their names. I shall try to find some supporters, though. Jeffpw 14:56, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Good luck in finding some! I found one kook supporter who was willing to say this was a good idea. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone of the caliber of Mother Theresa or Princess Diana will speak up for this conference's merits, but I doubt it. That said, I am sure, if we're patient, that George W. Bush will make a statement of support when he thinks the microphones are turned off. :-s Jeffpw 15:36, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Lain

I read through it and didn't find much in the way of typos, etc. A few things but not much. Sounds like an interesting series. Good luck getting it to featured status. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs) 17:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not really into Japanese anime, but I don't have anything against it (unlike my husband who hates anime with a passion (he had a bad experience with a college roomate who did nothing but watch Dragon Ball Z and Braveheart over and over and over again)). This sounds really interesting though; I am into philosophy, science fiction, and fantasy, and this sounds like it combines elements of those with anime in a unique way. I might try to find it at Blockbuster. It'll just have to watch it when my husband's not home. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs) 17:40, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Jews at 2006 Iran Holocaust conference.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Jews at 2006 Iran Holocaust conference.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Newtype USA

Hi Rene!

Thanks for getting the Napier article, that's appreciated. I've got it myself by now, and I think it will be great material for future work on anime, particularly when we finally get to the task of having NGE GA and FA! I was told that there is a review of Lain in the January 2005 edition of Newtype USA. Any chance you might get me a copy of that, or maybe a review of the review? Thanks anyway :)--SidiLemine 12:31, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't have it. There are three other users listed on my page who have it though. Perhaps you can ask them: User:GunnarRene/Sources#Newtype_USA. --GunnarRene 12:41, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Newtype USA

Hi Farix. I am close to FAC with Lain, and one of the only ressources I'm still lacking is the Newtype USA review of January 2005. Could you possibly get me a copy of it, or maybe a review of the review :)?--SidiLemine 12:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

It's your typical puff piece from Newtype USA. Basically, it announces that the series is out in a 13-episode box set and gives a basic plot summery. The only thing that you may find useful are the final two paragraphs.
Remove the quotes when you are finished with it. --TheFarix (Talk) 21:06, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Quotes have been used and removed. Thank you so much again.--SidiLemine 11:09, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Congratulations :) Glad I could help. — Deckiller 23:21, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, congratulations in getting Lain to FA. :) Good luck in taking on Eva - if you like, let me know when you put it up for peer review. - Malkinann 06:28, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Enter the Wu-Tang

Hello $yD!. After consulting User:Tutmosis, I was wondering if you could copyedit an article for me. I want you to help me bring Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) to featured status. Apparently you are talented at copyediting (at least according to Tutmosis), and I hope that you can benefit the aforementioned article. Thanks.Noahdabomb3 20:53, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki participation

Hi Sidi. I would like to discuss with you. We can do it via talk or via Yahoo (I am trex132 on yahoo). As you can see from my talk page, I am currently involved in an arbitration and WP:ANI discussion regarding an arbitrary block of an editor I had a disagreement with. I find it highly ironic that I would pursue arbitration to reinstate a user who has irritated me on more thanone occasion, but I strongly feel that abuse of administrative power is more destructive to Wikipedia than any disruptive editor could ever be. In any event, if you want to discuss the Wikipedia project, I would thoroughly enjoy it. Through our discussions on the Iran Holocaust Conference article, I have come to respect you and your opinions. Your input would be appreciated. Sincerely, Jeffpw 12:48, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RahXephon

Hi GunnarRene. I was wondering if you still had work to do on RahXephon. The peer Review seems to have calmeddown, and My personnal guess is that the LoCE will act more promptly if the request is move to "AFC needs CE". Would you rather waitbefore you put it up to FAC? It's "your baby", so I'll go with whatever you say, but I'm pretty eager to see what the FAC people will say.--SidiLemine 15:08, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, if we got the whole shebang through copyedit I might go to FAC as fast as possible, since a good copy-edit should not go to waste. If that doesn't happen, however, I might have a treat in store for the legacy section. (See the to-do-list.) Additionally, I would like to run through the check-list and spell check one last time. --GunnarRene 16:55, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] NGE

I see what you're saying about the quantity of sources; I'm just concerned about the quality of them. Even though this is a pop-culture article, I'd really hate to rely on out-and-out fan-sites, even for statements about fan-reactions. My personal test is: 1) Is it commercial? 2) If not, does the author or site have reasonable credentials? Anyway, the biggest weakness, I think, will be the lack of Japanese reactions. This isn't Excel Saga, that was relatively cult even among anime fans. This is Evangelion. My Japanese professor, who was probably here in the States getting her doctorate when Eva first came out, knows about the show. Fortunately, this is Eva, so there is a mass of articles in Newtype-USA and elsewhere. Perhaps I'm just prattling on pointlessly. :)--Monocrat 19:38, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mea Culpa

Hi again -- just wanted to drop you a note and apologize for suddenly disappearing during your Lain FAR. I was planning to be around, but wound up off-wiki for a about a month due to having a family member in hospital unexpectedly. I should most likely be easier to get a hold of in the future, and I'm glad to see the article was eventually promoted -- I would have certainly supported it the second time around, as it looks much better. If I can make it up to you by helping you out with anything in the future let me know. Thanks for the good work and happy editing, -- Bailey(talk)

[edit] Copyedit request

Hi there! I saw your name in a list of the League of Copyeditors. I'm about to send Same-sex marriage in Spain to FAC for the first time. Would you terribly mind copyediting it before I do? Peer review revealed prose issues that needed addressing by a good copyeditor, which is why I'm here asking for your help. Pretty please? :) I'd be willing to help you in exchange with anything you might need. I've seen you have an interest in anime, so do I. Maybe I can help with one of your articles? Cheers and thanks for your time Raystorm 13:49, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your help! I'm liking a lot how the article looks like now. I'll try to enlist other copyeditors as well as you said, but I'm very grateful for your assistance. Any little bit helps. :) If you need help with anything, drop me a line at my talk page okay? Cheers! Raystorm 22:43, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Faces.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

Thanks for uploading Image:IwakuraYosuo.jpg.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] League of Copyeditors participation drive!

Dear League member,

We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. If you can, please help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week:

Thanks for your help! Rintrah 16:01, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi there... I still haven't downloaded the Zuma game (i've rarely been on a windows box these days), but i did manage to get the Azumanga Daioh series full (i should be able to tell you soon about what i think of it).

[edit] The Wikipedia Discovery

I'm such a noob... I'm only getting, at last, how the categories work... Or at least so do i think. I spent some time on the unusual articles page (did you know of the Voynich manuscript??), i realise now that i even forgot smoking tonight... Anyway, losing time here really isn't a loss of time, i guess... I'm doomed! arikel 00:12, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

I've been playing with Userboxes these times... In the process, i've come to one you might like to use :

レイン This user is connected, wherever he is...

Ok, forget it, it seems i have no right to use this picture to make a userbox... Some other Userboxes i made have seen their image removed... Fair use is tricky indeed... arikel 15:58, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

This user heard the Word of Captain Mosey.

I couldn't resist, after looking at that page. Really excellent. I don't know if the picture will remain, though... As you may see, i put the katakana version of Lain to fit in the userbox, instead of her pretty face. arikel 12:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Working (and Taxes) in the USA

Salaries stated in job postings are gross. Your actual take-home pay depends on too many variables for employers to guess at. Salary.com actually has a paycheck calculator that helps estimate the tax burden. Find a job similar to yours in pay, and then click on the "Paycheck" tab. KevinCuddeback 16:23, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
