Şenol Güneş (born 1 June 1952 in Trabzon) is one of the most famous Turkish footballers of all time, and is now also a very successful manager.

He began his career at Erdoğdu Gençlik, playing as a goalkeeper. He later moved onto the Trabzonspor amateur team, and began playing for the senior team soon after. He played for Trabzonspor for nine years, between 1975 and 1984. In his time he won six league championships and 31 caps for the national team, skippering them on five occasions. He was a part of the 'Trabzonpor Efsanesi' ('The Trabzonspor fable') team that captured the imagination of Turkey along with players like Turgay Semercioğlu, Necmi Perekli, and Ali Kemal Denizci.

His management career started at Trabzonspor, he was assistant to a couple of managers before he got his chance as head coach at the club. He came closest to winning the championship in 1996, but only came second after leading for most of the season. He also played in the UEFA Cup where he was knocked out by Schalke 04. He left the club soon after, and worked at other clubs like Antalyaspor. In 2000, he was hired to coach Turkey. At the time, many thought hiring a man with no significant coaching triumphs was not going to work. Turkey qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and surprised many people by finishing third and then 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup finishing third. Turkey were one of the outstanding teams of the tournament and their spirited play and attitude impressed everyone. Şenol Güneş won the UEFA Coach of the Year award for 2002. After the World Cup he received many offers from Greece , Brazil and Spain but he wanted to stay with Turkey. After Turkey failed to qualify for Euro 2004, Şenol was sacked as manager. However, he had proven to many people that he had the capabilities of managing at the top level in his four years in charge. In 2004 also the national team of South-Korea and football club Flamengo from Brazil showed their interesse in him.

He returned to Trabzonspor in January 2005, signing a three and a half year contract but quit shortly after the back to back poor results. There were rumours that Güneş would be taking a coaching job in Iran or in the United Arab Emirates.

On 8th December 2006, FC Seoul, one of the leading football clubs in the K-League, announced their three-year contract with Şenol Güneş starting from 2007. FC Seoul also has former national mid-fielder Lee Eul-Yong who played for Trabzonspor when the club was managed by Güneş.

Şenol Güneş is married with two children.
