- January 9 - Peter Minuit sails from Texel island for America's New Netherland colony, with 2 ships of Dutch emigrants.
- February 2 - King Charles I of England is crowned, but without his wife, Henrietta Maria, who declines to participate in a non-Catholic ceremony.
- February 6 - The Huguenot rebels and French government sign the Peace of La Rochelle.
- April 25 - Battle at the Dessauer bridge: Monarch Albrecht von Wallenstein defeats Earl of Mansfeld.
- May 4 - Peter Minuit becomes director-general of New Netherland for the Dutch West India Company.
- May 24 - Peter Minuit buys Manhattan from Native American tribe (Lenape or Shinnecock or Canarsie) for trade goods, valued at 60 guilders ("$24").

- Peter Minuit, director of the New Netherland colony, begins a policy of "purchasing" Manhattan from the Lenape.
- In Sweden, work begins on building the sailing ship Vasa.
- The Duchy of Urbino is incorporated into the Papal States.
