The 1996 Quebec student strike occurred in 1996, in the province of Quebec, Canada. It involved over 30 students' unions of CEGEPs across the province as well as some departmental associations. It was indirectly part of the opposition to the Axworthy reform, but mostly a reaction to the looming menace from Lucien Bouchard's government to unfreeze education costs, which hadn't been augmented since 1994.
Initiated by the Mouvement pour le Droit à l'Éducation, the strike lasted a month. To the disappointment of the students' union, the government later introduced new costs for international students and the controversial taxe à l'échec.
