Your edits have been reverted. While I admit I don't entirely agree with the removal of the content, an admin has removed it for being unsourced and cruft, so please leave it. Drake Clawfang 21:57, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

- It's ethnocentric. It was created by an American without any input from other nations to represent humanity to aliens. It's a drawing, not a photo, badly drawn no less. It depicts caucasians representing humanity. The figures don't look like real humans. The significance of the drawings is undermined by the fact that contacting aliens has nothing to do with representing humanity. 64.236.245.243 21:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

- "In the original sketches from which the engravings were made, we made a conscious attempt to have the man and woman panracial. The woman was given epicanthian folds and in other ways a partially Asian appearance. The man was given a broad nose, thick lips, and a short "Afro" haircut. Caucasian features were also present in both. We had hoped to represent at least three of the major races of mankind. The epicanthian folds, the lips, and the nose have survived into the final engraving. But because the woman's hair is drawn only in outline, it appears to many viewers as blonde, thereby destroying the possibility of a significant contribution from the Asian gene pool. Also, somewhere in the transcription from the original sketch drawing to the final engraving the Afro was transmuted into a very non-African Mediterranean-curly haircut. Nevertheless, the man and woman on the plaque are, to a significant degree, representative of the sexes and races of mankind." -- Carl Sagan's Cosmic Connection: An Extraterrestrial Perspective by Carl Sagan and Jerome Agel, p. 26. ISBN 0521783038. In other words, no, it isn't "ethnocentric". And it was on an American spacecraft. When your country sends a spacecraft out of the solar system, feel free to put any sort of plaque on it you want. We promise not to complain.74.134.234.31 06:16, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

What would you suggest instead? I can see an argument that since the majority of the people on Earth are Asian, we should have an image of a naked Asian male and female. Would this deal with your objection? TimVickers 21:10, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Depicting races to represent all humanity is POV. A photo of a human skeleton does not raise sides, and stays neutral. 64.236.245.243 21:14, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
However, a human skeleton does not show what we look like. We do not put a photo of a cat skeleton on the Cat page, so why put a photo of a human skeleton on the human page? TimVickers 21:34, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Because cats don't come on this website and voice their displeasure that their particular breed isn't represented. Humans are comprised of many different races. Just showing one particular race is not representative of humanity. Our skin, hair, and faces are different because of the geographic location of where our ancestors evolved. However our skeletons have not changed. This is one characteristic that is the same for all races, and is representative of Homo Sapiens. 64.236.245.243 21:46, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
Many characteristics are common between humans, however, as I said, the lead photo in an article needs to show what the subject of the article look like. A photo of a skeleton does not show what people look like. I'd be happy with a representative of the most common appearance being the top article, since that would be logical. Where could we get an equivalent image of a Chinese person? TimVickers 22:21, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Probably yes, but it wouldn't be as famous, important, or encyclopedic as this one. Also, I believe that is a Featured picture. | AndonicO Talk · Sign Here 22:54, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- The images in question are not caucasian. They only give the illusion of such because they are white, which is a consequence of the image needing to be black-and-white. Actually carefully looking at the image, and specifically at the facial features of the man and woman, show facial features that are not typical caucasian ones. "Finally the plaque depicts man and woman in what to humans is a characteristic gesture of friendliness but also shows how limbs can be moved and displays the important four fingers and opposing thumb. The figures and physiognomy were carefully chosen and drawn for ethnic neutrality, and no attempt is made to explain to an alien intelligence what may be mysterious differences between two physical types-man and woman."ref The picture was chosen because of its lack of a clear ethnic or racial focus. -Silence 22:53, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
- Your explaination does not validate the image, nor is it verifiable, it's only your opinion. They still appear caucasian despite your excuses. Even if they weren't it still doesn't matter. It is not possible to represent humanity with a "neutral" race. Humanity is comprised of many races, it's impossible to create a fictional neutral race, because one does not exist nor would I be satisfied with a neutral race because it's not real. It's still a drawing, not a photo. It's still badly drawn regardless. Carl Sagan's wife attempt at representing humanity to aliens has nothing to do with actually representing humanity. 64.236.245.243 14:22, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Talk:Essjay controversy
Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Note that the three-revert rule prohibits making more than three reversions in a content dispute within a 24 hour period. Additionally, users who perform a large number of reversions in content disputes may be blocked for edit warring, even if they do not technically violate the three-revert rule. Rather than reverting, discuss disputed changes on the talk page. The revision you want is not going to be implemented by edit warring. Thank you. WjBscribe 15:25, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD
I won't revert a polite discussion about a new AfD for the article. However, please be aware that it's already been through that with an overhwelming consensus to keep, one way or another. It'll be awhile before it comes up again. Meanwhile, your edits do resemble trolling. With all due respect, please try to explain your position as thoroughly as possible and try not to be combative about it, editors may more readily listen to you then. Thanks. Please not that AfD you keep linking to is closed. It cannot be reopened. A new AfD discussion would needed. Though I don't think that's appropriate. Unfortunately, the software does not allow new pages to be created by users who are not signed in. WjBscribe 17:01, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] FYI
I just thought you might like to know some information about user talk pages. [1]
On a user's own talk page, policy does not prohibit the removal of comments at that user's discretion, although archival is preferred to removal. Please note, though, that removing warnings from one's own talk page is often frowned upon.
So while Gwen removed content that she felt was was un needed on her page, it is not recommend to remove warnings that have been placed on a user page as you have done so. I am happy for you to removed this message when you have read it. Regards - Munta 18:28, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- Moreover, this is the talk page for an anon IP so it's not wholly your page, but shared with anyone else who may someday edit here under this IP. Gwen Gale 18:42, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
