The A48(M) is a motorway in Wales between Cardiff & Newport. It is a spur off the M4 towards Cardiff. It is 2 miles (3.2km) long. At St Mellons it runs continuously into a further 6 miles of the grade-separated A48, which also features (albeit narrow) hard shoulders^[1].

It opened in 1977^[2], originally as an ending for the M4. The M4 was subsequently extended from junction 29 in 1980^[2] and this section of road was renumbered A48(M). It has been suggested that its continuation westwards was projected to be from St Mellons, as maps from the period show^[specify].

A 6 mile motorway, the Port Talbot bypass was opened in 1967^[2] had also formerly been numbered A48(M) before incorporation into the M4's westward extension in the 1970s^[3].
Another A48(M) is shown on some maps as the Morriston bypass, but its existence has been controversial^[4].

There is an abandoned carrigeway at M4 Junction 29, whose existence has not been definitively explained^[5]^[1].
The A48(M) has the unusual feature that it has no junction options: at both ends it just leads into limited-access junctions.
