"A World Without Love" is a song that was recorded by the English duo Peter & Gordon and released as their first single in February 1964, reaching #1 in the UK Singles Chart in April. Written by Paul McCartney and attributed to Lennon/McCartney, the song was backed by the song "If I Were You" written by the duo. It was later included on the duo's self-titled debut album in the UK, and in the U.S. on an album of the same name. In June 1964, "A World Without Love" topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
[edit] Trivia
- Peter Asher, the "Peter" of Peter and Gordon, was the brother of Jane Asher, Paul McCartney's girlfriend at the time.
- John Lennon mentioned in interview that he thought this was a terrible Paul McCartney song. He thought the opening line in particular ("Please lock me away..") to be hilarious because of the connotation that the singer was mentally ill.[citation needed]
- The songs was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 songs That Shaped Rock and Roll" link
