Aaron Albert Mossell II was born in Canada. His father was Aaron Albert Mossell I, (1824-?) who moved to Hamilton, Canada; and his mother was Eliza Bowers. By 1870 the family was living in Lockport, Niagara County, New York.
Mossell attended Lincoln University and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Law School in 1888, the first African-American to do so.[2] One of his children, Sadie Tanner Mossell, also graduated from Penn and served as an editor of the Law Review.[3]
