Advertising board
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An advertising board is usually a term reserved for the advertising hoardings seen at football (soccer) matches. Although there are other more general forms such as billboards and posters.
Advertising boards first appeared around football stadiums in the 1980s after the influence of on-shirt advertising. Now they are standard place amongst most professional football grounds.
They are a source of humour when a player shoots for goal and misses the target but hits the advertising boards instead, sometimes knocking them over. "He's hit the advertising board!" the commentator may exclaim.
This type of advertising goes way back in history to 1876.
