Afonso Alves Martins Jr, Afonso [ɐ'fõsu 'ɑuvɨʃ] (born January 30, 1981) is a Brazilian footballer currently playing for Dutch side SC Heerenveen. Afonso started his career with Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro. 2002 he left Atlético for Swedish side, Göteborg-based Örgryte IS. In 2004 he left the club and moved to Malmö FF. With Malmö he took the Swedish Champions Title in 2004. He stayed for the 2005 season and half of the 2006 season in Malmö, before moving to Heerenveen.
Alves finished second in the Swedish Top Goal scoring league 2 years in a row. He is also known for his large feet. He is a talented freekick taker. Currently, he is the top goalscorer in the Eredivisie with 25 goals. According to the manager of SC Heerenveen, Koos Formsma, his price at the moment is €20,000,000. In an interview with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet coach Gertjan Verbeek states that Alves would be for sale at the price €25,000,000. If Alves is being sold Malmö FF is entitled to 15% of the amount.

Alves was injured in a match against FC Twente. Four weeks later Alves returned on the field in home match against RKC Waalwijk, but didn't score. The following game, a hometie against NAC Breda, he scored a hattrick.
