AIDES[1] is a French community-based non-profit organisation that was founded in 1984 by Daniel Defert following the death of his lifelong companion Michel Foucault.
Its aim is to bring people living with HIV/AIDS together with their loved ones and peers into an organized entity dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS and to defend the rights of people and communities affected by this disease.[2] AIDS has no financial involvement in research programs.
As of 2006, AIDES is active in France in 80 cities with 350 staff members and 800 registered volunteers. It is the largest non-governmental organization in France[3], by number of activits and budget. It is considered as one of the main observer of the epidemic in France[4]. Internationally, AIDES has developed strong partnerships with fellow community-based NGOs both in Africa and in Europe to strengthen the role of civil society by sharing best practices and to jointly advocate for global access to care and prevention[5]. It also developped a parntership with the UN Programme on HIV/AIDS[6]
