Airspan (NASDAQ:AIRN) is a Wireless local loop and WiMax equipment manufacturer founded in 1993 when DSC decided to spin-off its BWA (Broadband wireless access) R&D facility in the UK. The first product, AS4000 platform, was based on CDMA radio technology adapted for fixed wireless access and was a market success especially in developing markets, albeit it has rapidly become technologically obsolete.
Since then, Airspan has established presence in more than 90 countries and expanded its product lines, by acquisitions, OEM agremments and R&D. In October 2002 it acquired the WipLL product line from the Israeli branch of Marconi. In December 2004 it took over an Israeli softswitch and VoIP gear maker ArelNet. In November 2005 it bought out RadioNet, a Finnish maker of WiFi systems.
Airspan is a worldwide leader in broadband wireless with over 300 customers in more than 100 countries.
As a founding member of the WiMAX forum, Airspan has led the way in WiMAX, being among the first wave of companies to achieve certification for its Base Station and Customer Premises Equipment.
Airspan is also leading in the race to Mobile WiMAX. Through careful choice of advance technologies, the flagship base station HiperMAX is software upgradeable to Mobile WiMAX. The 16e-USB device announced in 2006, will be the first Wave 2 compatible Mobile WiMAX device for laptops.
Combining WiMAX and Wi-Fi has been another area where Airspan products have been paving the way for citywide mobile broadband through innovation and practical real-world solutions.T Links:
