Aizawl is the capital, as well as the political and cultural centre, of the Indian state of Mizoram. It is the seat of the government of Mizoram, and all important government as well as public sector offices are located at Aizawl. It is also the headquarters of the Aizawl district. This 112-year old city is also the commercial and cultural hub of the state with all economic activities centered there. Aizawl lies in the northern part of Mizoram, just north of the Tropic of Cancer.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Aizawl had a population of 229,714. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Aizawl has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 51% of the males and 49% of females literate. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The closest airport is Lengpui Airport, near Aizawl. Aizawl is connected to Kolkata and Imphal. Indian Airlines (Alliance Air) flies a daily Kolkata-Aizawl-Kolkata route, a Kolkata-Aizawl-Imphal-Aizawl-Kolkata route Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and a Guwahati-Aizawl route Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
The nearest railhead is Silchar, 184 km away in Assam.
NH-54 connects Aizawl with the rest of the country through Silchar. Buses and taxis are available from Silchar to Aizawl (6-8 hours), with night services also available. Aizawl is also accessible by road from Shillong and Guwahati. Within the city, taxis are the chief mode of transport and rates are negotiable. Buses ply on route within the state.

Bara Bazar is the main shopping center with stalls selling garments and other commodities. The main bazaar is where the people are best seen in their traditional costumes selling produce from farms and homesteads including river crabs with little wicker baskets. Luangmual Handicarfts Centre is 7 km away; the 'Khumbeu' ceremonial bamboo hat is made here using waterproof 'hnahthial' leaves. The Mizoram State Museum is situated at Mc Donald Hill in the town center. Though small, it has an interesting collection of historical relics, ancient costumes and traditional implements.
