Albert Vanhoye

Albert Cardinal Vanhoye S.J. (born July 24, 1923) is a French cardinal.
He was born in Hazebrouck Nord, France. He entered the Jesuits in 1941 and studied at Jesuit Scholasticates in France and Belgium, as well as obtaining a licentiate and doctorate in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

He was ordained for the Jesuits on July 25, 1954 and held various academic and teaching positions, as well as being a Consultor for a number of dicasteries of the Roman Curia, before being appointed Rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute and Secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission (Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was, at the time, its president).
He was created Cardinal-Deacon of S. Maria della Mercede e Sant'Adriano a Villa Albani by Pope Benedict XVI at the consistory of 24 March 2006, after he was already 80 (and therefore already ineligible to vote in future conclaves). The Holy Father dispensed him from the obligation to be consecrated bishop on his elevation to Cardinal.
