[edit] Chip shop
Is the chip shop really notable? sounds a bit like an ad to me. -R. fiend 19:55, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- I've done a fair bit of fighting spam linking round here, but in this case it is probably more of a valid comment than an advert (and its not a link). I've visited Aldeburgh with a group of friends, half of whom were making a pilgrimage to a particular fish and chip shop towards the south end of the high street and on more than one occaision I've seen it with queues half way round the block. I seem to recal that there is a particularly noted fish and chip shop in Whitby too. -- Solipsist 21:02, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

- Yes, absolutely true on all counts (in fact the owners have two shops on the high street); the shop has been talked up in a number of national newspapers (see for example, The Observer). The Magpie Café is probably the one you're thinking about in Whitby. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 12:55, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
I lived in Aldegurgh for around a year in the mid 90s and ate at the Fish and Chips shop in question. I can't remember the name but it is on the opposite corner from The Hart pub. It is quite good and clean and benefits from getting the fish fresh most mornings from the local fisherman (I was told). In the Summer there are often queues round the corner. However in the winter it does not open at all. The owner is only interested in cashing in on the Summer trade and presumably hibernates in the winter.
To the above - The chippy does open in the winter - I've been there several weekends (at least) over the last few winters and although it might not be open as much it still does open in the evenings at least.
[edit] The kitsch mantlepiece ornament on the beach
My theory regarding this and other "sculptures" (for example those horrible concrete budgies that have been dumped in the countryside to the east of Ipswich by an 'artist' who recieved his art training in Her Majesties Prisons) is that they reflect the kitsch taste in mantlepiece and windowsill ornaments of local councillors who are nearly all retired and with very little education - they like scaled-up knick-knacks.
Personally I cannot see how even the best scupture can ever improve apon nature.
[edit] Network reception in Aldeburgh highstreet/Beach
Hi I'm on Orange at the moment and I get very good reception throughout Aldeburgh just wondering which other networks work. I am probably going to switch to O2 but need to know if I will get reception. If you have a phone on O2 or any network can you add to this page saying your network and if you get reception and the quality. Thanks alot!
