[edit] Plot and other details
Alfie tells the story of a young man whose life consists of running from woman to woman, until several life reversals make him rethink his lifestyle. Alfie was originally a radio play written by Bill Naughton, who also wrote the screenplay of the 1966 film version. Alfie frequently speaks directly to the audience, as a deliberate Brechtian alienation effect.
The 1966 version was nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Michael Caine), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Vivien Merchant), Best Music, Song (Burt Bacharach and Hal David for "Alfie"), Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. The film featured music by noted jazz musician Sonny Rollins, backed by British jazz musicians including Stan Tracey. In 2004 the magazine Total Film named it the 48th greatest British film of all time.
